Andreas Oettel (archaeologist)

Andreas Oettel (* 1964 ) is a German classical archaeologist .

After graduation, Andreas Oettel worked on the antique bronzes from Boscoreale in the Berlin Collection of Antiquities . For the dissertation he worked on several old excavations in the Vesuvius area . With the work find contexts of Roman Vesuvius villas in the area around Pompeii. The excavations from 1894 to 1908 he finally received his doctorate in 1994 at the Free University of Berlin . For his work he was awarded the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute for the period 1994/95 , with the help of which he was able to travel the Mediterranean region . From 2001 to 2006 and again in 2008/09, Oettel was employed by the Secretary General at the German Archaeological Institute . From 1998 to 2003 he held a teaching position at the Seminar for Near Eastern Antiquity at the Free University of Berlin and since 2006 at the University of Cologne . From 2012 to 2014 he worked for the Palmyra - Dura - Hatra project. Studies on the archeology of the Syro-Arab culture from the founding of Europos to the fall of Palmyra (approx. 300 BC – 272 AD) Research fellow of the Gerda Henkel Foundation . From 2014 to 2019, Oettel headed the excavation project, financed by the German Research Foundation , The Late Antique Fort of Vig in Northern Albania: Function and Context .

From 2000 to 2004, Oettel and Hartmut Kühne led the investigation of the Limes fort Tall Dġērāt am Chabur in northeast Syria , a rescue excavation due to the construction of a dam . In 2003 he was also awarded the Theiss Archeology Prize , which was awarded for the first time, for outstanding journalistic contributions in the field of archeology . Another research focus of Oettel is the ancient city of Lissos in today's Albania . Here he is the project manager for the DAI, while Gëzim Hoxha is in charge of the work for the Archaeological Institute of the Albanian Academy of Sciences .
