Andreas Ritzos (* 1421 in Heraklion ; † 1492 ; also Andreas Ritsos ) was a Greek icon painter .

life and work

Ritzos was born in Heraklion on the island of Crete as the son of a goldsmith. He is considered the greatest Cretan painter of the second half of the 15th century. His works, like those of the painter Angelos, were models for the following generations of icon painters. Ritzos was based on the Byzantine style, but allowed the Italian painting style of the 14th century to flow into some of his works. He is mentioned in a document until 1492. His son Nikolaos (1446–1503) was also an icon painter.
