Scientific contribution

Scientifically, Sturm has dealt with the immune homeostasis of the intestinal mucosa , particularly in the case of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. His work focused on wound healing mechanisms of the intestinal epithelial barrier and the regulation of the cell cycle and apoptosis of mucosal T cells . In particular, he characterized regulatory peptides and lipid mediators that influence intestinal epithelial wound healing processes as well as cell-cell interactions and the cell cycle and apoptosis of lamina propria T cells. He was able to show that certain lipid acids, LPAs, and galectins can restore the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier after an injury and control the excessive immune reaction in the intestine. For the demonstrated effect of galectin-2 on the restoration of immune homeostasis, Sturm was awarded two patents by the European Patent Office (EP06020467.4, EP1593386). Recent basic scientific studies by Sturm focus on the identification of tumor necrosis -factor-alpha dependent signaling pathways in the mucosal immune system.

Sturm's clinical research projects include nutritional issues and investigations into the intestinal microbiota .

As part of his scientific work, Sturm successfully supervised more than 10 doctorates on the various aspects of the regulatory and repair mechanisms of the intestinal mucosal barrier.
