Andreas Unterberg (* 1955 in Schwelm ) is a German neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery . Since 2003 he has been director of the neurosurgical clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital . Since 2018 he has been on the Presidium of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI). His scientific focus is neurotraumatology, neurosurgical intensive care medicine and intraoperative imaging of brain tumors. Unterberg specializes in brain tumor surgery, skull base surgery and pituitary surgery.

Career

Unterberg studied in Giessen and Munich and received his doctorate summa cum laude from LMU Munich in 1982 (doctoral supervisor: A. Baethmann). In 1981 he became a research assistant at the Institute for Surgical Research at LMU Munich . From 1981 to 1985 he investigated the effects of potential mediators of secondary brain damage on the blood-brain barrier function , in particular the effect of bradykinin on the cerebral vessels . This was followed in 1985 by a 15-month DFG research grant at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond (Virginia) in the Department of Neurosurgery at A. Marmarou, where he researched post-traumatic brain edema .

Unterberg completed his specialist training in neurosurgery at the LMU Munich and the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin). In 1988 he completed his habilitation at the LMU Munich. In 1991 he became C3 Professor for Neurosurgery at the Free University of Berlin and in 1995 Deputy Director of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at the Charité . Since April 2003, Unterberg has been a full professor and director of the neurosurgical clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital .

From 2008 to 2010 Unterberg was President of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC) and from 2011 to 2013 President of the German Society for Neurointensive and Emergency Medicine (DGNI) . Since 2018 he has been a member of the Presidium of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) . Services

Unterberg is a specialist in neurosurgery. From 2003 to 2019, he performed more than 2000 operations on various brain tumors in Heidelberg. He also has experience in more than 500 pituitary operations and 2500 spine operations.

Unterberg is also the author or co-author of over 450 articles listed in PubMed . His main research areas are neurotraumatology , intracerebral bleeding , neurointensive medicine ( multimodal monitoring ), decompression strepanation and neuro-oncology , in particular intraoperative MRI resection control. He also made contributions to international guidelines on these topics.

Publications

In total, Unterberg published over 450 original articles in international journals listed in PubMed , as well as numerous book articles, books and monographs. His h-index was 61 in May 2019.
