Andreas Michael Zeiher (* 1955 ) is a German cardiologist , professor and director of the Medical Clinic III at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Zeiher studied medicine from 1974 to 1981 at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg with a PhD. med. 1981. Then he was an assistant doctor with Hanjörg Just , was in 1986/87 for a research stay at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of UCLA and completed his habilitation in 1990 in Freiburg in internal medicine under Hanjörg Just. From 1990 he was senior physician in Freiburg and head of the interventional department Cardiology. From 1995 he was professor and director of the Medical Clinic III at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main. From 2001 to 2006 he was deputy medical director of the university clinic.

In 2007 he and Stefanie Dimmeler received the Ernst Jung Prize for research on the use of stem cells to improve cardiac blood flow. Both showed in a clinical study with over 200 heart attack patients that the catheter infusion of the patient's own stem cells from the bone marrow increased the formation of new blood vessels and increased the pumping capacity of the heart. However, the regenerative abilities of the stem cells decreased with the severity of the infarction. The exact mode of action of this therapeutic approach is still the subject of research, since the stem cells do not directly replace the heart muscle cells and this does not provide a sufficient explanation for the effect due to their relatively small number.

In 1991 he received the Rudolf Thauer Prize and in 2009 the Paul Morawitz Prize of the German Society for Cardiology .

Since 2011, Andreas Zeiher has been the site spokesman for the "German Center for Cardiovascular Research eV" (DZHK) at the RheinMain site. The DZHK is a partner of the German Centers for Health Research , which are committed to improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common diseases and was founded in 2011 on the initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . The aim of all six German Centers for Health Research is to bring results from basic research into clinical application more quickly.

In 2019, Andreas Zeiher became President of the German Cardiac Society - Heart and Circulatory Research eV . appointed.
