Andrei Stratan

Andrei Stratan (born September 3, 1966 in Chișinău , Moldovan SSR ) is a Moldovan diplomat and politician. From 2004 to 2009 he was his country's foreign minister.

Andrei Stratan studied from 1983 to 2000 at the Economics Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute of Chișinău, as well as at the Faculty of Law of the State University of the Republic of Moldova. He is a doctor of economics. After completing his first degree, he worked in the customs administration of the Republic of Moldova from 1991 - for a short time still under Soviet rule. In 2002, meanwhile promoted to general director of the state customs authority, he moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as ambassador with special tasks. Among other things, he was here as the national coordinator for the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe , of which Moldova is a member. In June 2003 he was promoted to the first deputy of the foreign minister and on February 4, 2004 he became foreign minister of Moldova himself. Since December 2004 he has also been deputy head of government. After the Communists' narrow electoral defeat in the parliamentary elections in July 2009 , he was replaced by Iurie Leancă in September 2009 . On August 1, 2010 Stratan became chairman of the small party Partidul Republican in Moldova .

In addition to his mother tongue, Stratan also speaks Russian and English. He is married and has two children.
