Andrena dorsata is a sand bee from the Andrenidae family . It is a solitary , nest-building bee that has two generations a year and flies in April and May as well as in July and August.

features

The bees have a black body color and are approx. 9 to 10 mm long.

The females are hairy red-brown on the thorax and each have a narrow, light band on tergites 2 to 4, which is interrupted in the middle on the second tergite. The splint brush has short hair that is brownish-yellow on top and whitish on the bottom. The tibia of the hind legs are orange-red.

The males, on the other hand, are hairy yellowish-white on the head and thorax and have tergites with indistinct, interrupted end bands.

distribution and habitat

Widespread in large parts of Europe, not in Scandinavia, widespread in the Mediterranean region, partly also in North Africa, in the Middle East to Israel, to the east to Central Asia.

A. dorsata occurs in sand and gravel pits, flood dams, grasslands, fallow vineyards and on the edges of forests. The females nest individually in bare or sparsely vegetated areas, both in sandy and loamy soil.

Way of life

The females collect pollen from flowers from different families, so they are polylectic. A. dorsata is bivoltine : it flies in April and May, as well as in July and August.

Systematics and species delimitation

There are several similar sand bees, for example A. propinqua , A. congruens , A. confinis or A. susterai . A. dorsata and A. propinqua are sometimes considered to be conspecific (they may be synonyms ). Special literature is required for an exact determination.

Parasites

As a cuckoo bee is Nomada zonata known.
