Andres Põder

Andres Põder (born November 22, 1949 in Haapsalu , Estonian SSR ) is a Protestant theologian . He was Archbishop of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK) from 2005 to 2014 .

Career

Andres Põder graduated from high school in Pärnu in 1969 and then studied theology at the EELK Theological Institute in Tallinn . After his ordination in 1976 he worked as a pastor in the Estonian parishes Viru-Nigula , Suure-Jaani and Räpina .

In 1990 he was elected pastor in Pärnu and since then has repeatedly been elected provost of the Pärnu provost and assessor in the EELK consistory in Tallinn. On November 24, 2004, the Church Assembly of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church appointed him Archbishop. On February 2, 2005, he was installed in the Tallinn Cathedral Church . He is the successor to Archbishop Jaan Kiivit , who has retired.

Offices and functions

From the various church-wide tasks, Põder's collaboration in the compilation of the new “ Hymn and Prayer Book of the Church ” (1980–1990) and in the liturgical commission of the EELK (until today) should be emphasized. As a member of the Legal Commission (since 1990) he has played a decisive role in the constitution of the constitution and other laws of the EELK.

From 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the joint committee of the EELK and the Estonian government and a member of the college of the church newspaper " Eesti Kirik " (" Estonian Church "). Since 1996 he has been teaching cybernetics and canon law at the Theological Institute of the EELK.

Andres Põder took an active part in the process of regaining Estonian independence and was politically involved in the subsequent phase of the restructuring of Estonian society.

On November 22nd, 2014, Põder retired when he reached the age of 65. Urmas Viilma was elected as his successor in the episcopate on November 26, 2014 . His consecration took place on February 2, 2015.
