from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrew JS Hamilton (* 1951 or 1952 in Dorset ) is a British theoretical astrophysicist .

Hamilton received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from St. Catherine's College, Oxford University, and a PhD in astronomy from the University of Virginia . He is a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder in Boulder , where he has worked since 1986.

He is known for computer simulations (with his Black Hole Flight Simulator ) about the interior and the environment of black holes on the basis of general relativity and with the most modern graphics software ( OpenGL ) using supercomputers .

His film Black Holes, the other side of infinity (duration: 23 minutes), produced with support from the National Science Foundation , NASA , the television station PBS (NOVA series) and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications , was shown at the Denver Museum of Nature in 2006 and Science. A corresponding contribution to the visualization also appeared in the PBS / NOVA episode about the supermassive black hole in the Milky Way ( Monster of the Milky Way ). He also appeared in the PBS series himself.

He also deals with the analysis of large amounts of observational data in cosmology , for example from galaxy surveys to extract cosmological parameters.
