Andrew Parrott (born March 10, 1947 in Walsall ) is a British choir director , conductor and musicologist .

Life

Parrott studied at Oxford University , where he focused on the historical performance practice of the music of the 16th and 17th centuries. He is best known as the director of the Taverner Choir, Consort and Players ensemble . His book Bach's Choir: The New Understanding met with an extraordinary response from experts. In this work he advocates the theory initiated by Joshua Rifkin that Bach performed his concertante church music only with a vocal quartet or vocal quintet. He was Music Director of the London Mozart Players from 2000 to 2006 and Music Director of the New York Collegium from 2001 to 2010 and has been Honorary Conductor of the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra since 2006 . As a guest conductor he worked a. a. at Kent Opera, La Scala in Milan and Covent Garden in London .
