Dorsal view

Andrion regensteinense is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The elongated-oval beetles are 3–6.5 mm long. They have a brownish basic color. The pronotum is strongly rounded on the sides. In addition, it is strongly curved in the longitudinal direction and densely dotted. The wing covers of the beetles have protruding bristles. Usually a pale longitudinal stripe runs down the middle of the pronotum and elytra. The front legs, especially in the males, are elongated.

distribution

The species is widespread and common in western Europe. The occurrence extends in the north to southern Scandinavia , in the south to northwest Africa (Morocco and Algeria), in the east to western Russia. The species is also represented and widespread in the British Isles . The species does not appear to be found on the Balkan Peninsula .

Way of life

The beetles can be seen most of the year, especially in March and April. The larvae feed on the ectophagus from the roots and tubers of their host plants, which means that, unlike many other beetle larvae, they live outside the roots. The host plants include the goose clover species Cytisus balansae , Cytisus multiflorus and broom broom ( Cytisus scoparius ), the gorse species Genista cinerascens , the common gold rain ( Laburnum anagyroides ) and the gorse species Ulex europaeus , Ulex minor and Ulex europaeus . The pupation takes place in the ground. The adults of the new generation appear in late summer and autumn and overwinter in the ground.

Taxonomy

The original name of the beetle species was Curculio regensteinensis Herbst , 1794. In 2007 Velázquez de Castro introduced the genus Andrion and assigned it to the species previously known as Sitona regensteinensis ( Herbst , 1794). It is the only species in the genus Andrion .
