Android Automotive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Android Automotive is a variant of Google's Android operating system that has been adapted for use in vehicle instrument panels. Android Automotive was developed by Google and Intel , together with vehicle manufacturers such as Volvo and Audi . The project aims to provide an operating system code base for vehicle manufacturers who can then develop their own version of an operating system. In addition to infotainment tasks such as mobile communication, navigation and playing music, the operating system aims to master vehicle-specific functions such as controlling the air conditioning.

In contrast to Android Auto , Android Automotive is an independent operating system that runs on a vehicle unit and does not depend on an external device.

history

Android Automotive was first announced by Google in March 2017.

In February 2018, Polestar (Volvo's electric car brand) announced the Polestar 2 , the first car with Android Automotive for spring 2020. The Volvo XC40 Recharge , which will also be equipped with Android Automotive, is due to hit the market in autumn 2020 .

In April 2019, Google opened the programming interface (API) for developers to start developing applications for Android Automotive.

In September 2019 General Motors announced that they would like to use Android Automotive to operate the infotainment systems in their vehicles from 2021. Audi has announced the development of its own platform based on Android, which would then compete with Android Automotive.

In August 2020 it was announced that Groupe PSA (Opel, Peugeot and Citroën) would like to use Android Automotive from 2023.
