The Andromeda Nacktbasidie ( Exobasidium karstenii ) is a smut fungus art from the family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae). It lives as an endoparasite on rosemary heaths ( Andromeda polifolia ) and their sprouts and leaves. Symptoms of infestation by the Andromeda naked basid are widened, thin and soft leaves of dark purple to black color and mycelium emerging on the underside of the leaf. The species is common in Northern, Central and Western Europe.
features
Macroscopic features
The Andromeda Naked Basidia is initially invisible to the naked eye. The initial symptoms of the infestation can initially only be seen on the leaves. Infected leaves turn dark bluish to purple or black. They are wider, thinner and softer than the unaffected rosemary heather. The mycelium of the fungus eventually emerges as a white fluff on the underside between the leaf veins.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of the Andromeda naked basid grows intercellularly and forms suction threads that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The basidia are long, unseptate and narrow-clumped, the spores hyaline (transparent) and thin-walled. The spores of the species are 12-20 µm long.
distribution
In Europe, the spread of the Andromeda naked basid is limited to western, central and northern Europe, it is linked to the occurrence of rosemary heather ( Andromeda polifolia ).
ecology
The only host of the Andromeda nude basid is the rosemary heather. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants; initially limited to the leaves, then finally to the entire plant. The transmission from one plant to the next occurs through flight of spores. The spores germinate in germ tubes or conidia , from which a new mycelium then develops.
