Andrzej Seyfried

Andrzej Seyfried (born July 27, 1922 in Lwów ; died January 5, 2009 ) was a Polish scholar, professor of medicine, specialist in the field of rehabilitation, and an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Sports in Warsaw .

Life

Seyfried went to elementary school and Mieczysław-Kistryn-Realschule in Lwów. He graduated from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan in 1949 . In 1950 he received the degree of doctor of medicine, completed his habilitation in 1970 and attained the title of professor in 1980. He was a student of the world-famous orthopedic surgeon Viktor Dega . Since 1984 he has been a professor of physical education in Warsaw and since 1987 he has been the first dean of the rehabilitation faculty of that university.

Since 1963 Seyfried worked as an expert in rehabilitation for the World Health Organization (WHO). From 2003 to 2007 he was a member of the Committee on Rehabilitation, Sport and Social Integration of Sciences. He is also considered a pathobiomechanical pioneer in the treatment of polio .

Act

In 1953 he founded a rehabilitation center in Połczyn-Zdrój , and a year later the Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Sanatorium in Zagórze near Warsaw. In 1962 he created the Rehabilitation Department at the Institute of Rheumatology in Warsaw, where he was director until 1984. As part of the work of the WHO, he led an international team in Algeria and also served as an expert at the WHO regional office for the south-east of India and Ceylon, and for the WHO regional office in the western Pacific. He received a certificate of recognition from the WHO for his work and success in the treatment of polio.

His scientific work dealt with, among other things

  • the existing compensation mechanisms for functional disorders,
  • the development of methods for evaluating pathological changes in the musculoskeletal system,
  • the identification of mechanisms of action of holistic rehabilitation,
  • improving understanding of rheumatoid hand function and
  • physiotherapy in childhood with neuromuscular diseases.

He was the author of about 100 newspaper and magazine articles published in Polish, English, French and German.
