Andrew Ivan Bell (* 25. April 1964 in Peterborough , England ) is a British pop - singer . Together with Vince Clarke he forms the duo Erasure .

Life

Bell began his singing career according to his own statements in the church choir. For a while he worked in a factory as a meat packer. In 1985 he was with Pierre Cope a member of the project Dinger , which recorded the single Air of Mystery . In March 1985, he responded to an advertisement with which Vince Clarke was looking for a singer for a new music project. Bell was the 43rd participant in the audition and was awarded the contract. Clarke and Bell have been working together ever since.

On December 14, 2004, Bell announced that he was HIV- positive and had known this since 1998. Bell has spoken German since he was at school, after being able to choose between Latin and German. He chose German because he didn't want to learn a dead language. Bell later lived in Berlin for a few years and was able to improve his German language skills there. He currently lives in Hastings with his partner .

Solo projects

1991 Bell took over in the opera The Fall of the House of Usher by Peter Hammill , the role of Montresor. In October 2005 he released his first solo album Electric Blue . The album includes three duets with Claudia Brücken from Propaganda and Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters .

social commitment

Bell is active in the animal rights organization PETA . For this he recorded the song Rage in 1991 together with Lene Lovich . They donated the proceeds exclusively to PETA. Bell also supported various AIDS organizations in the UK. He is also involved in the gay movement and, among other things, fought against the earlier anti- gay legislation in his British homeland.
