Andrew Phillip "Andy" Williams (born October 8, 1977 in Bristol ) is a former Welsh football player . The two-time senior international had to end his career early due to persistent injury problems.

Career

Williams came from the youth department of Southampton FC , where he received his first professional contract in May 1996. The fast winger, who was equally suitable for both outside positions, made his breakthrough in the first team in the 1997/98 season , when he made a total of 24 competitive appearances for the Premier League club. In his professional debut on matchday 1, he was on the starting line-up in a 0-1 home defeat against Bolton Wanderers , and in the further course of the season he was mostly used as a substitute. His development earned him a number of appointments to the Welsh U-21 national team and multiple nominations for the senior team of Wales . He made his international debut for Wales on November 11, 1997 in a 3-0 friendly defeat against reigning world champions Brazil , in June 1998 he was on the starting line-up for the first time after a 3-0 win in another friendly against Malta but remained at the same time his last assignment for the A-national team.

In the following season 1998/99 Williams came under coach Dave Jones only one season and was finally loaned out in September 1999 to the second division Swindon Town , who took him under contract after four appearances in early October for £ 65,000. At Swindon he played in the episode mostly in the left midfield and came in his first season to 36 league appearances. At the end of the season, the club rose as a knocked-off bottom of the table in the Second Division . Shortly after the start of the following season, Williams had groin problems that required surgery. It was only towards the end of the season that he found connection to the team and came to three more missions, but Swindon did not renew his expiring contract.

Williams then ended his professional career and played for Bath City in the Southern League . After a rather mixed season, he was named Player of the Year within the team in 2002/03. In the 2003/04 season, Williams again forced groin problems to take a long break before he interrupted his football career in July 2004 due to persistent knee problems. In the 2005/06 season he tried Mangotsfield United , also in the Southern League, a comeback, but did not get beyond a use as a substitute.
