Angel Lam
Angel Lam On-Ki ( Chinese 林安淇 , Pinyin Lín Ānqí , Jyutping Lam 4 On 1 kei 4 , Cantonese Lam On-Ki , born August 2, 1978 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese composer.
biography
Lam graduated from the Peabody Conservatory and Yale University . She has received scholarships from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund , the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong, and the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University . Her teachers included Christopher Theofanidis , Aaron Jay Kernis and Martin Bresnick . Masterclass and tutoring: George Crumb , Poul Ruders , Christopher Rouse , George Tsontakis , Detlev Glanert , Ingram Marshall , James Primosch , Joel Hoffman , John Harbison , Brian Ferneyhough and Marc Dalbavie .
Lams compositions were u. a. listed in Hong Kong, China, Japan, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Austria, France, Korea, Argentina and the USA. In 2006 she received a composition commission from the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall . The resulting piece, Empty Mountain, Spirit Rain, caught the attention of Yo-Yo Mas , who performed it with his Silk Road Ensemble on concert tours through the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Southeast Asia, Switzerland and China.
As a second commissioned work by Carnegie Hall, Sun, Moon, and Star was created in the following year under the mentorship of Osvaldo Golijov and Dawn Upshaw . In collaboration with the theater artist Martha Clarke , the music was created for a theater project for dance and visual projections. Additional compositions have been commissioned by the New York City's Greenwich Village Orchestra , the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Houston Chamber Choir at the American Masterpieces Festival .
In 2009 she was named "Artist of the Month" by Musical America magazine and "Yalie of the Week" by Yale University's Yale Alumni Magazine . For Yo-Yo Ma and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra she composed a cello concerto for the China Festival Ancient Paths, Modern Voices: A Festival Celebrating Chinese Cultur at Carnegie Hall. In 2010 she worked a. a. for Aldo Parisot's Yale Cellos , the Yale Norfolk Chamber Music Festival , the Minnesota Orchestra's Inside the Classics concert series and the Hong Kong Arts Festival .
