Angela Christmas (Original title: Angela's Christmas ) is an Irish-Canadian animation - short film by director Damien O'Connor from the year 2017. The plot is based on a short story by Irish writer Frank McCourt .

action

The story takes place in Limerick , Ireland in the 1910s . Angela attends the church service for Christmas with her family. She notices the baby Jesus in the manger. Since it is insufficiently covered and it is also very cold in the church, she assumes that it would be freezing. After the service she separates from her family on an excuse and steals the Jesus doll from the manger (although she fears that her mother might spank her for it). Then she sneaks home, but is caught by a boy from the neighborhood trying to take the baby Jesus home with her. She succeeds in laying the doll child in her bed, but in the meantime the boy next door has teased her act.

Angela's mother is very touched, but insists that the baby Jesus doll be brought back to church. Angela and her family make their way to church. Just as she is about to put the doll back, Pastor Creagh puts it down, who has already informed the police. The police, in turn, look at the case and praise little Angela for her courage and her big heart. The pastor now also has an understanding and declares that he would make sure that the baby Jesus is always warm from now on.

Production and publication

The template is Frank McCourt's only children's story and is based on a story his mother Angela McCourt told him as a child. Screen Ireland and Brown Bag Films studios were responsible for production . Frank McCourt's widow, Ellen McCourt , was executive producer . In addition to the two actors Lucy O'Connell and Ruth Negga , who voiced Angela and her mother, Brian Gleeson and Pat Kinevane were also involved in the synchronization. Irish singer-songwriter Dolores O'Riordan , who died a year later, wrote the theme song.

The film premiered on December 8, 2017 in the United States and was released worldwide on November 30, 2018 via the streaming platform Netflix .

reception

criticism

Oliver Armknecht from Film-rezensions.de awarded 5 out of 10 points:

“Based on the children's book by Frank McCourt, the animated film 'Angela's Christmas' tells how a child takes the Christ Child figure out of church to keep it warm. This is sparse in terms of content, a bit kitsch at the end, but shows what is happening nicely from the perspective of a child and also pleases with the atmospheric depiction of the city. "
