biography
Angelo Massarotti is a Cremonese painter who worked between the 17th and 18th centuries. In the school of Agostino Bonisoli he got to know the elements of Bolognese classicism, then in 1675 he went to Rome with Carlo Cesi, where he studied and copied the Vatican frescoes by Raphael and Giulio Romano .
He met Carlo Maratti and received the commission for the church of Santa Anastasia (1678) as well as for the fresco decoration and five paintings for the chapel of Santa Lutgarda in the church of San Salvatore in Lauro in Rome (1679-1680).
In 1680 he was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca and returned to Cremona in 1681. Of the five paintings in the oratory of Santa Maria Annunziata (Arco-ospedale of Santo Spirito in Sassia ), the first was completed in Rome in 1680 and the other four in Cremona.
After various trips and work in northern Italy, Angelo Massarotti settled permanently in Cremona, where he died in 1723 and, according to his last wishes, was buried in the church of the Franciscan monastery of Corpus Domini.
His students included Giovanni Angelo Borroni, Pietro Frassi and Sigismondo Benini.
