The Angertor was a city gate of the second city wall of medieval Munich .

location

The Angertor was located in the south of Munich's old town at the point where the city wall made a bend to the north, roughly at the intersection of today's Unterer Anger and An der Hauptfeuerwache streets. Today the city skyscraper , also called the old technical town hall, stands at this point .

history

The Angertor was first mentioned in a chamber bill in 1319. It led into the lower Anger and had no particular traffic significance, as the Sendlinger Tor was not far from it on the main road. Yet it was just as fortified as the four main gates. In front of the actual gate tower was a barbican with two round towers on each side.

Because of its low traffic importance, the Angertor was often closed during the day. In 1807 the gate tower and in 1869 the front gate were demolished.
