Powder Tower (Munich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The powder tower was a gate tower of the city fortifications of medieval Munich . It should not be confused with the former ammunition depot, built in 1838 on the site of the former Alabama depot , which was used as a music club under the same name until the end of 2006.

location

The Powder Tower stood on Sendlinger-Tor-Platz outside the city walls southwest of the still standing front gate of Sendlinger Tor .

history

The Powder Tower was erected outside the city moat on the roundabout that was built in front of the Sendlinger Tor towards the end of the 15th century. The way led from the Sendlinger Tor over the city moat to the roundabout, turned there to the south and left the roundabout through the powder tower and a bridge over the moat around the roundabout.

In 1492 there is talk of work on a powder tower, although it is not clear whether this refers to this tower or one of the other towers in which powder was stored.

It is not known when the powder tower was demolished. It was still present in Jakob Sandtner's city model of Munich from 1570. It is no longer preserved in the model today, but the square recess in which it was previously used can still be seen in the roundabout in front of Sendlinger Tor. The tower is also still shown on Tobias Volckmer's map of Munich from 1613, but no longer in the map of Matthäus Merian from 1642. It is therefore assumed that it was removed in connection with the construction of the wall fortifications around Munich.
