The Talburgtor , also called Talbruckor , was one of the five city gates of the first city wall of medieval Munich, built towards the end of the 12th century . The Talburgtor was also known as the lower gate , valley gate or town hall tower . It was in the east of the old town where the town hall tower still stands today on the south side of the old town hall .

history

The gate was first mentioned in a document in 1301 under the name porta inferior (lower gate) in correspondence with the upper gate or Kaufingertor in the west of the city . The Salzstrasse ran through these two gates through Munich to the west. Since the Kaufingertor was mentioned as the Upper Gate in 1239, it can be assumed that its counterpart, the Lower Gate, also existed at that time.

The Talburgtor was a simple tower with a gate passage. 1392–94 the gate was redesigned as a town hall tower, in 1460 it was destroyed by lightning strikes along with the old town hall. Between 1470 and 1480 Jörg von Halspach rebuilt the old town hall with the town hall tower in the late Gothic style parallel to the construction of the Frauenkirche . The tower is also shown in this version on the oldest view of the city of Munich in Schedel's World Chronicle from 1493.

In the 16th century the facade was painted with frescoes and the tower was given an onion dome . The tower is shown in the city model of Munich by Jakob Sandtner from 1570. In the 19th century he got a neo-Gothic pointed helmet.

In 1944, the tower of the Old Town Hall was badly damaged by bombs and then torn down. In 1972 he was in the late Gothic style as it was built by Halspach, rebuilt .

Miscellaneous

The toy museum is now housed in the old town hall tower .

Outside the town hall tower, on the outer wall of the old town hall, there is a statue of Juliet of Verona , a gift from Munich's twin city Verona .
