A stop signal generator , abbreviated ASG , is a lighting device on official emergency vehicles , with which other road users can be asked to stop in traffic .

It finds application in use forces of the police , the military police , the Federal Office for the freight (BAG) , or the duty for checking the vehicle driver , of the vehicle , the occupants , the load , the driving license , the shipping documents, the control sheet, the tachograph , or the like, for example, as part of a traffic control .

The ASG consists of a specific arrangement of red lights, mostly consisting of light-emitting diodes , which create a lettering. The front ASG on the emergency vehicle is expediently designed in mirror writing so that road users ahead can read it more easily in the interior mirror. The words such as “Stop” and “Police” are displayed alternately to improve perception.

The vehicle to be stopped can be stopped from the front or the rear by activating the ASG or directed to a specific location with a request such as “Please follow”, where the road user is actually stopped when the emergency vehicle stops and ideally further instructions with direction indicators or by gesture , for example by pointing a finger.

ASG can be attached to a roof structure, at the rear or at the front of the vehicle. They replace the so-called signal trowel or stop rod, which is more commonly used today for stand controls. Roof structures are the most common.

In Germany, the ASG is expressly permitted as a stop signal in Section 52 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). Every vehicle driver in Germany must obey the request due to the road traffic regulations , otherwise a chase and a manhunt could result. In addition, fines will be payable for non-compliance .

In August 2013, a forward-looking red flashing light and a stopping horn as a stop signal transmitter were also approved by the StVZO in Germany.

Special regulations apply to stopping by the BAG and the military police.
