Ann Mckechin (* 22. April 1961 in Paisley ) is a Scottish politician of the Labor Party .

Life

McKechin was born in Paisley in 1961. She attended Sacred Heart High School and Paisley Grammar School, and then went on to study law at the University of Strathclyde . From 1983 McKechin worked as a solicitor, first in Paisley, then in Glasgow .

Political career

Between 1995 and 1998 McKechin worked for the Glasgow Kelvin constituency Labor Group . In the first Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 McKechin had a place on the regional electoral list of the electoral region West of Scotland . However, as a result of the election result, she received no mandate.

After Maria Fyfe , who had represented the constituency of Glasgow Maryhill in the British House of Commons since 1987 , did not run for the 2001 general election, the Labor Party put McKechin on as her successor. On election day, she received 60.4% of the vote and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time.

In the course of the constituency revision, McKechin's constituency Glasgow Maryhill was dissolved at the end of the electoral term. McKechin therefore applied in the general election in 2005 for the mandate of the newly created constituency of Glasgow North . On election day, she prevailed against five opponents and kept her seat in parliament. She received a position as Parliamentary Private Secretary under Junior Secretary Jacqui Smith . From 2008 she was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Scotland Ministry .

In the following general election in 2010 , McKechin defended her mandate safely. After holding a junior ministerial post in the Ministry of Scotland in the Labor Party's shadow cabinet prior to the election , she was scheduled to be Scotland Minister following the election. After the SNP gained massive votes in the 2015 general election , McKechin lost the majority of votes in her constituency and left the British House of Commons. The mandate went to the SNP candidate Patrick Grady .
