Ann Todd
Ann Todd (born January 24, 1909 in Hartford , Cheshire , † May 6, 1993 in London ) was a British actress .
life and career
Ann Todd comes from a Scottish family from Aberdeen who moved to England. She came to London at a young age and took acting classes. First she played in the theater and from the mid-1930s also in film. She had one of her first major roles in 1938 in South Riding at the side of Ralph Richardson as his wife. It had its most successful period after the Second World War. In 1945 she made the film The Last Veil alongside James Mason and experienced the climax of her career when she was allowed to play the leading role in The Paradin Case in 1947 under Alfred Hitchcock's direction as a partner to Gregory Peck . During the filming of The Great Passion , she fell in love with her future husband David Lean , who later also became her most important director. They married in 1949. However, they divorced in 1957.
With the separation from David Lean, her career as a film actress came to an end. Todd starred in several Shakespearean productions at the Old Vic Theater in London during the 1950s and began a second career as a documentary producer during the 1960s . In 1980 her autobiography was published under the title The Eighth Veil .
