Anna Avramea

Anna Avramea (Greek Άννα Αβραμέα, also Κατσαντώνη-Αβραμέα, born November 7, 1934 in Komotini ; † 2008 ) was a Greek Byzantine and historical geographer .

Life

Avramea attended the fourth girls 'high school in Athens (Δ' Γυμνάσιο Θηλέων Αθηνών) and enrolled in the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Athens after graduating in 1952 . She finished her studies in 1957.

From 1960 to 1963 she specialized with a grant from the Foundation for state scholarships (Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών) in Paris in Historical Geography at paul lemerle and also took classes at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (VI Section), at the Collège de France (in Louis Robert and Roger Dion ) and at the Institut de Geographie. During the same period, she carried out specific research on the historical geography of the Greek area in the Bibliothèque nationale (registration and classification of the handwritten and printed maps of the Department of Maps and Drafts for the Historical Greek Area) and in the National Archives of France (collection of unpublished material on the Coasts of the south-eastern Mediterranean and the islands of the archipelago).

From 1964 to 1969, at the suggestion of Dionysios Zakythinos, she was assistant at the Chair of History at the Pantion University of Athens (Παντείο Ανωτάτη Σχολή Πολιτικών Επιστημών). Afterwards she worked for a while without remuneration in the Center for Byzantine Studies (Κέντρο Βυζαντινών Σπουδών) of the National Foundation for Research (Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών).

In 1970 she submitted her dissertation with the title Η Βυζαντινή Θεσσαλία μέχρι του 1204. Συμβολή εις την Ιστορικήν Γεωγραφίαν (“The Byzantine Thessalian University of Athens, which she defended in 1974, which she defended the historical University of Athens until 1204”). she received her doctorate with the grade very good.

In 1971 she began working on the Tabula Imperii Romani project of the Union Académique Internationale at the Academy of Athens . In 1980 she took over the management of the entire plant.

In 1984 she was accepted as an assistant for Byzantine history to the faculty of the Department of History and Archeology at the University of Crete ; In 1988 she was appointed associate professor and in 1994 full professor. From then on she taught Byzantine history for 18 years until her retirement in 2002. Afterwards she was honorary professor (ομότιμη καθηγήτρια) at ​​the University of Crete.

From 1973 she was the representative of Greece in the Commission for Historical Geography of the Association Internationale des Études Byzantines . She was a member of various societies and organizations, including from 2001 to 2008 the Board of Directors of the National Bank's Education Foundation (Μορφωτικό Ίδρυμα Εθνικής Τραπέζης).

Her husband Pavlos Avrameas gave her library and archive to the library of the University of Crete at her request.
