The plant genus Anomalluma belongs to the subfamily of the silk plants (Asclepiadoideae) in the family of the dog poison plants (Apocynaceae). This genus contains only two succulent species.
description
Vegetative characteristics
Anomalluma species grow as trunk succulent perennial plants . The succulent, 0.4 to 1 cm wide and 10 to 60 cm long, green, cylindrical stem axes are irregularly warty or mosaic-like and have four very sharp edges. They contain clear milky juice . Anomalluma mccoyi forms a tuber from the partially underground, lower part of the stem axis and the hypocotyl .
The leaves, reduced to fleshy, almost circular scales, fall off early. Stipules are missing.
Inflorescences and flowers
At the internodes of the upper part of the stem axis there are pseudo-gold inflorescences with only three flowers each, two of which open at the same time. Inflorescence axes and pedicels are smooth. The sour-smelling flowers are hermaphroditic, radial symmetry , five-fold with a double perianth . The five egg-shaped sepals are about as long as the corolla tube and fused at their base. The five 3 to 4 mm long, fleshy petals are spread out flat and fused together between a quarter to half their length. The inside of the petals is chestnut colored and the outside is green. The purple-colored secondary crown is divided into staminal and interstaminal secondary crown . The upright pollinia are D-shaped. There are two smooth, free, upper carpels . The scar head is white. Nectar is formed.
Fruits and seeds
The follicles are usually in pairs or, in Anomalluma mccoyi, not infrequently individually. The smooth, oval-shaped follicles are without edges, with a diameter of 2.5 to 5 mm, slim and 2 to 4 cm long.
Chromosome numbers
The chromosome numbers are 2n = 22.
Systematics and distribution
The distribution area is only Somalia and Oman to southern Yemen .
The genus Anomalluma was created in 1993 by Darrel Charles Herbert Plowes in Anomalluma Plowes: A new generic name for Caralluma dodsoniana Lavranos (Stapelieae-Asclepiadaceae). , presented in Cactus and Succulent Journal (Los Angeles), 1993, 65, pp. 167-168. Type species is Anomalluma dodsoniana (Lavranos) Plowes . This species was found in 1995 in Pseudolithos dodsoniana (Lavranos) Bruyns & Meve by Peter V. Bruyns and Ulrich Meve in Edinburgh. J. Bot. , 52, 202 renamed; then it was placed back in the genus Caralluma . In 2002 Ulrich Meve and Sigrid Liede-Schumann again put two species in the genus Anomalluma .
The genus Anomalluma belongs to the subtribe Stapeliinae from the tribe Ceropegieae in the subfamily Asclepiadoideae within the family of Apocynaceae .
There are currently two Anomalluma typologies:
- Anomalluma dodsoniana (Lavranos) Plowes (Syn .: Pseudolithos dodsonianus (Lavranos) Bruyns & Meve ): It occurs in northern Somalia and Yemen.
- Anomalluma mccoyi (Lavranos & Mies) Meve & Liede (Syn .: Pseudolithos mccoyi Lavranos & Mies ): It occurs on the southern Arabian Peninsula.
