In the attacks on August 24, 2004 , two Russian passenger planes that had taken off from Moscow-Domodedovo Airport were brought down by explosives during the flight . 90 people were killed; there were no survivors. In both cases the debris was scattered over a large area.

The plane of the scheduled flight Volga-Aviaexpress 1353 ( Russian Волга-Авиаэкспресс 1353), a Tupolev Tu-134A-3 with the aircraft registration number RA-65080, flew from Moscow to Volgograd Airport . It started at 6:15 p.m. GMT and was lost at 6:56 p.m. GMT. There were 35 passengers and 9 crew members on board.

It crashed near the villages of Butschalki / Proschtschenoje , Tula Oblast .

Siberia Airline Flight 1047

The Siberia Airlines flight 1047, a Tupolev Tu-154B-2 with registration number RA-85556, was to fly to Sochi Airport . It started at 5:35 PM GMT and was lost contact at 6:59 PM GMT. She had previously sent an aircraft hijacking signal. She crashed with 38 passengers and 8 crew members on board near Gluboki , Rostov Oblast .

root cause

As a result of the investigations, traces of the explosive hexogen were found in both wrecks . The perpetrators identified, Amanta Nagajewa (Volga-Aviaexpress flight 1353), 30 years old, and Sazita Dschebirkhanova (Siberia Airlines flight 1047), 37 years old, were both Chechen women and lived together in Grozny . Female suicide bombers are known as Smertnizy in Russia .
