List of attacks on commercial aircraft

The list of attacks on commercial aircraft includes attacks with explosive devices or fire accelerators . The list does not include kills and aircraft destroyed by acts of war on the ground, as well as cases in which the crew was shot by occupants in order to deliberately crash the aircraft.

Attacks on commercial aircraft operated by civil airlines are only taken into account . Incidents involving military aircraft , business aircraft and small private aircraft are not included in the list.

September 9, 1949 Canadian Pacific Air Lines A Douglas C-47 crashed over Cap Tourmente (northeast of the Saint Lawrence River ) on a domestic flight from Québec to Baie-Comeau as a result of a bomb explosion. In the DC 3-D 280 / CP-CUA case, the jewelery dealer Albert Guay, whose wife to whom the attack was committed, was on board was convicted (see also Canadian-Pacific-Air-Lines flight 108 ) . 23
April 13, 1950 British European Airways An explosive device on board a Vickers Viking exploded over the English Channel . The crew managed an emergency landing. A flight attendant was seriously injured. 0
April 17, 1950 United Air Lines While the luggage was being loaded at Los Angeles Airport , an explosive device exploded on board a United Air Lines plane. 0
September 24, 1952 Mexicana de Aviación An explosive device explosion on a domestic flight injured five passengers aboard a Douglas C-47 . The crew was able to make an emergency landing. 0
April 11, 1955 Air India A bomb exploded in the right landing gear of a Lockheed Constellation on a special flight for a Chinese delegation. The machine hit the South China Sea. Three crew members survived the incident. 16

March 4th 1956 Skyways About 20 minutes before departure for Great Britain, a bomb exploded in the hold of a Handley Page Hermes 4 at Nicosia Airport ( Cyprus ) . 0
July 25, 1957 Western Airlines A passenger detonated a bomb aboard a Convair CV-240 on a flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles . He was torn from the machine. The crew managed an emergency landing. 1
December 19, 1957 SAGETA On the flight from Oran ( Algeria ) to Paris , an explosive device exploded on board a Sud-Est SE.2010 . The crew could land safely in Lyon . 0
September 8, 1959 Mexicana de Aviación The detonation of an explosive device tore a hole in the hull of a Douglas DC-3 , through which the assassin fell overboard. The crew was able to make an emergency landing. 1
January 6, 1960 National Airlines An explosive device exploded on board a Douglas DC-6 . The machine was on a scheduled flight from New York to Miami . 34
April 28, 1960 Linea Aeropostal Venezolana A passenger detonated a hand grenade on board a Douglas DC-3 and caused the machine to crash. Two surviving inmates were able to report on the incident before succumbing to their injuries. 13
May 10, 1961 Air France A Lockheed Starliner crashed after a bomb explosion about 50 km southwest of Ghadames over the Algerian Sahara. 78
May 22, 1962 Continental Airlines The tail of the Boeing 707 tore off when a bomb detonated . The machine was on a flight from Chicago to Kansas City (see also Continental Airlines Flight 11 ) . 45

November 22, 1966 Aden Airways About 20 minutes after taking off from Mayfa'ah (MFY), Yemen , a Douglas DC-3 broke up in a bomb explosion. The explosive device was placed on the left side of the fuselage at the level of the wing root. 30th
May 29, 1967 Aerovías Cóndor de Colombia An explosive device tore a hole in the side of a Douglas DC-6 , which was on the flight from Barranquilla to Bogotá . 0
June 30, 1967 Aden Airways At the airport Aden an explosive device detonated aboard a Vickers Viscount . Because attacks were expected, the aircraft had been quarantined for 24 hours after an engine change. 0
October 12, 1967 British European Airways As a result of a bomb explosion, a Comet 4 broke while cruising on the leg from Athens to Nicosia . The wreckage fell into the Mediterranean. 66
November 12, 1967 American Airlines An explosive device detonated with little effect in the hold of a Boeing 727 . The crew continued the flight to San Diego . 0
19th November 1968 Continental Airlines On the approach to Denver , an explosive device placed in the on-board toilet exploded and set off a fire. The crew managed to land the Boeing 707 safely. 0
March 11, 1969 Ethiopian Airlines On the Frankfurt airport exploded in the cabin of a Boeing 707 , two explosive devices. The passengers had already left the plane. 0
5th August 1969 Philippine Air Lines A passenger detonated an explosive device in the on-board toilet of a Hawker Siddeley HS.748 on a domestic flight . The assassin was torn from the ship. The plane landed safely. 1
22nd December 1969 Air Vietnam On the approach to Nha Trang a bomb exploded in the cabin of a Douglas DC-6 . Due to the failure of the hydraulics, the landing flaps could not be extended, so that the landing took place at high speed. The machine rolled over the end of the track and collided with a school. In addition to 10 inmates, 24 people were killed on the ground. 34
February 21, 1970 Austrian Airlines A bomb exploded in a Sud Aviation Caravelle . The crew managed an emergency landing. The terrorists were also responsible for the simultaneous attack on Swissair flight 330. 0
February 21, 1970 Swissair A Palestinian group from Beirut took responsibility for the attack on the Convair CV-990 (see also Swissair flight 330 ) . 47
March 14, 1970 United Arab Airlines Shortly after take-off from Alexandria, an explosive device detonated, which was hidden under the fairing of the left engine of the Antonov An-24 . The aircraft was irreparably damaged during the emergency landing. 0
2nd June 1970 Philippine Air Lines A bomb tore a hole in the side of a Fokker 27 . The crew managed to make an emergency landing on the aircraft. 1
September 6, 1970 Pan American World Airways A Boeing 747 hijacked to Cairo was blown up by the terrorists after passengers and crew left the aircraft. 0
September 12, 1970 British Overseas Airways Corporation A Vickers VC10 hijacked on 9 September was detonated by terrorists at the former RAF airfield Zarqa (Dawson's Field) in Jordan after passengers and crew left the aircraft. 0
September 13, 1970 Swissair A Douglas DC-8 hijacked on September 6th at the former RAF airfield Zarqa (Dawson's Field) in Jordan was blown up by terrorists after the passengers and crew left the aircraft. 0

August 24, 1971 Alia At Madrid-Barajas Airport , an explosive device exploded in the rear on-board toilet in a Boeing 707 . There were no passengers on board. 0
October 10, 1971 Aeroflot A Tupolev Tu-104 , which was supposed to make a scheduled flight to Sevastopol , had an accident after taking off from Moscow-Vnukowo airport in a bomb explosion.

January 26, 1972 Jugoslovensky Aerotransport Shortly after entering Czechoslovakian airspace, a Douglas DC-9 crashed. According to the Czechoslovak State Security, the machine crashed from a height of 10,160 meters after a bomb exploded in the cargo hold. This scenario is controversial among some aviation experts, but it has not been refuted.

March 8, 1972 Trans World Airlines An explosive device exploded in the cockpit of a Boeing 707 parked at Las Vegas Airport . Previously, a blackmailer had demanded two million dollars and threatened to plant bombs on TWA aircraft if they failed to pay. 0
May 25, 1972 Lan Chile On the leg from Panama City to Miami, a pipe bomb detonated on board a Boeing 727 and caused an explosive pressure drop in the aircraft . An emergency landing took place in Montego Bay ( Jamaica ). 0
June 15, 1972 Cathay Pacific Crash of a Convair CV-880 near Plei Cu ( Vietnam ) after an explosive device exploded on board.

August 16, 1972 El Al Shortly after take-off from Rome-Fiumicino Airport , an explosive device exploded in the hold of the Boeing 707 . The machine returned to Rome and landed safely. 0
September 16, 1972 Air Manila International After taking off from Iligan , a hand grenade tore a hole in the side of the Fokker 27 . The debris damaged an engine. Two more, non-detonated hand grenades were found on board after the emergency landing. 0
March 19, 1973 Air Vietnam A Douglas DC-4 crashed after a bomb explosion in the hold. The machine was supposed to make a scheduled flight from Saigon to Buôn Ma Thuột . 58
17th December 1973 Pan American World Airways During boarding in Rome , terrorists threw firebombs into a Boeing 707 , which already contained 69 people, including the crew. The perpetrators then hijacked a Lufthansa plane to escape . 30th
March 3, 1974 British Overseas Airways Corporation After a plane hijacked in Amsterdam, the terrorists set fire accelerators on board a Vickers VC10 . The plane burned out. 0
March 22, 1974 Air Inter Before departure from Bastia ( Corsica island ), a bomb exploded in the hold of a Sud Aviation Caravelle that was to fly to Marseille . 0
August 6, 1974 Air Inter A Fokker 27 parked overnight at Quimper-Cornouaille Airport was destroyed by a bomb explosion. There were no people on board. 0
September 8, 1974 Trans World Airlines On the leg from Athens to Rome-Fiumicino , a bomb explosion in the rear cargo hold caused the Boeing 707 to crash. The plane crashed 93 km west of Kefalonia in the Mediterranean Sea. There had been an attempted attack on flight TW841 two weeks earlier (see table below). 88
3rd June 1975 Philippine Airlines On the approach to Manila , an explosive device exploded in the rear on-board toilet of a BAC 111-500 and tore a hole in the fuselage. The crew managed to land the aircraft. 1
5th July 1975 PIA At Islamabad Airport , an explosive device detonated in a Boeing 707 that had been placed under a passenger seat. There were no people on board. 0
January 1, 1976 Middle East Airlines A bomb explosion in the hold broke the Boeing 720 on a scheduled flight from Beirut to Dubai . The rubble hit the northern part of the Saudi Arabian province of Ash-Sharqiyyah . 81
2nd July 1976 Eastern Air Lines A Lockheed L-188 Electra parked at Boston Airport was destroyed by a bomb that detonated near the landing gear. 0
October 6, 1976 Cubana A Douglas DC-8 -43 crashes due to time bombs deposited by Cubans in exile.

17th August 1978 Philippine Airlines On a flight from Cebu City to Manila , an explosive device placed in the rear on-board toilet exploded and tore a hole in the side of the BAC 111-500 . The crew managed an emergency landing. 1
September 7, 1978 Air Ceylon Before take-off from Ratmalana Airport , an explosive device exploded on board a Hawker-Siddeley HS 748 . The machine was to be transferred to Bandaranaike International Airport without passengers . 0
19th February 1979 Ethiopian Airlines A Douglas DC-3 crashed southwest of Asmara after an explosive device exploded. There were no survivors. 5
April 26, 1979 Indian Airlines On the approach to Madras , an explosive device exploded in the front on-board toilet of a Boeing 737 , which led to a complete failure of the electronics. When landing, the machine rolled over the end of the runway and burned out.

November 15, 1979 American Airlines On the flight from Chicago to Washington, an explosive device detonated in the hold of a Boeing 727 . The pilots landed safely in Washington. 0
September 9, 1980 United Airlines At Sacramento Airport , an explosive device exploded while unloading baggage from a Boeing 727 . Two baggage workers were injured. 0
August 31, 1981 Middle East Airlines After arriving in Beirut , a bomb exploded in the Boeing 720 that had arrived from Libya , destroying the aircraft. There were no people on board. 0
October 13, 1981 Air Malta While unloading the luggage in Cairo , two parcel bombs exploded in the Boeing 737 that had arrived from Valletta . Four people were injured. A third explosive device was subsequently discovered. 0
December 12, 1981 Aeronica Before passengers boarded in Mexico City , a bomb exploded in the rearmost part of the cabin of a Boeing 727 . Three crew members and one airport employee were injured. 0
August 11, 1982 Pan American World Airways On the flight from Honolulu to Tokyo , an explosive device that was hidden under a passenger seat exploded. The pilots were able to land the Boeing 747 in Honolulu. The Jordanian assassin was arrested in Greece in 1988 . 1
September 23, 1983 Gulf Air A Boeing 737-200 crashed on approach to Abu Dhabi International Airport after a fire broke out on board. The fire was likely caused by an explosive device that detonated in the hold. The investigations also revealed that a passenger had checked in luggage but did not take the flight.

January 18, 1984 Air France After taking off from Karachi ( Pakistan ), a bomb detonated in the hold of the Boeing 747 and tore a hole in the fuselage. The crew managed to land the plane in Karachi. 0
February 9, 1984 TAAG After taking off from Huambo, an explosive device detonated in the cabin of a Boeing 737 and damaged the hydraulic lines. The machine rolled over the end of the runway during the emergency landing and was irreparably damaged. 0
March 10, 1984 UTA On board a Douglas DC-8 -63PF at N'Djamena Airport ( Chad ), two explosive devices exploded one after another, destroying the aircraft. 0
January 23, 1985 Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano On the flight from La Paz to Santa Cruz , a passenger set fire to dynamite in the front on-board toilet of a Boeing 727 . The plane landed safely in Santa Cruz. 1
March 9, 1985 Alia A bomb exploded in the hold of a Lockheed L-1011 at Dubai Airport . There were no people on board. 0
June 12, 1985 Alia Terrorists blew up a Boeing 727 in Beirut after passengers and crew left the hijacked plane. 0
June 23, 1985 Air India A bomb explosion in the hold caused the Boeing 747 to crash off the west coast of Ireland.

May 7, 2002 China Northern Airlines A passenger who had previously taken out high life insurance set gasoline on fire in the cabin of a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 . The machine fell into the sea, and all occupants were killed.

March 7, 1972 Trans World Airlines TWA ignored a blackmailer's request to pay $ 2 million. He had threatened to hide bombs on board four TWA aircraft. One explosive device was found on board a TWA aircraft in New York , and a day later a second destroyed a Boeing 707 in Las Vegas (see table above). 0
August 26, 1974 Trans World Airlines After arriving in Rome-Fiumicino, a small fire was discovered in the hold of a Boeing 707 launched in Athens . The cause of the fire was an explosive device that did not detonate properly. Two weeks later, a second bomb exploded on board a TWA machine on the same route (see table above). 0
August 26, 1978 Burma Airways Corporation After taking off from Hpa-an , a Twin Otter crashed after an explosion on board. The cause could not be determined exactly. A deliberate attack was not ruled out. 14th
January 27, 1979 Aeroflot On the leg from Oslo to Stockholm , four people armed with Molotov cocktails tried to kidnap a Tupolev Tu-154 . When they actually set off one of the gasoline bombs, they were overwhelmed by the other passengers. 0
June 27, 1980 Aerolinee Itavia A Douglas DC-9 crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea north of the island of Ustica . According to the investigators, the cause was a bomb explosion in the rear on-board toilet. The Italian judiciary ignored the report and concluded that the machine was accidentally hit by an air-to-air missile . see Itavia flight 870

October 26, 1986 Thai Airways International A passenger who tried to smuggle a hand grenade into Japan threw it into the rubbish bin in the rear on-board toilet after accidentally pulling the safety pin. The explosion caused an explosive pressure drop in the aircraft and damage to the hydraulic lines. Despite the partial loss of control, the crew managed to make an emergency landing on the Airbus A300 . 0
