The Abu Dhabi International Airport ( Arabic مطار أبو ظبي الدولي Matār Abū Zaby ad-duwalī , DMG Maṭār Abū Ẓaby ad-duwalī , English Abu Dhabi International Airport ) is the airport of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates . It is located 30.5 kilometers east of the city. The airport is the hub of the airline Etihad Airways .

history

The airport was opened in 1982 to replace the old Al-Bateen airport , which is close to the city and which served as a military airfield until 2008 and is now used as an airport for private jets . The airport was planned and implemented by J&P . The commissioning of a second terminal at the old location took place in September 2005.

expansion

At the old location, the capacities were exhausted, the rapidly increasing demand could only be met by relocating to the east. In October 2008, a second parallel runway was completed two kilometers north of the first runway. In January 2009 a third terminal was opened, which is primarily used by Etihad Airways. Construction of another large terminal near the northern runway began around 2010, but was shut down again a short time later due to financial difficulties as a foundation construction. Construction work did not resume until 2013, so that the X-shaped terminal was not expected to be completed until 2017. This modular expansion is intended to increase passenger capacity initially to 25 million and in the medium term to up to 40 million passengers per year.

Long-term plans even deal with a final capacity of 80 million passengers. The land required for this as yet undeveloped has been reserved. However, the second major airport in the UAE, which is currently being expanded, the Dubai World Central International Airport , which is only 80 kilometers away as the crow flies, is likely to create new competition.

Transport infrastructure

The airport is connected to Abu Dhabi city center by three streets: Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street (Highway 30), Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum Street (Highway 2) and Al Salam Street (Highway 8). The E 10 motorway to Dubai is around ten kilometers from the terminals. A public transport connection exists through shuttle buses with the inner city terminal (an outsourced check-in counter), through scheduled bus traffic to the rest of the inner city, as well as with taxis or private minibus operators.
