Dubai Al Maktoum International Airport ( IATA : DWC , ICAO : OMDW ) (also: "Dubai World Central Airport") is an airport in the district of Jebel Ali Village of Jebel Ali in the desert city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates , which since June 2010 for Cargo flights and since October 2013 for passenger flights.

After its final expansion in 2020-25, DWC is to become the largest airport in the world in terms of capacity. On February 23, 2011, it was officially approved as an airport for general aviation. It is located around 45 kilometers southwest of the previous Dubai airport . In 2015, a total of 463,236 passengers were handled.

Construction, opening

The DWC project has a modular structure. The first runway was completed in November 2007 after 600 days. In spring 2009, the 91 meter high control tower with base rooms was completed. A special feature of this tower is a station for observing meteors .

The first expansion stage, called "Phase 1", includes a freight terminal, the passenger terminal and the runway suitable for the Airbus A380 . There are a total of 64 parking spaces for aircraft.

The freight terminal opened in June 2010 and air freight traffic began. Passenger flights have been operating since October 2013.

use

Disappointing for the airport operator is the great reluctance of the airlines to use the DWC. Even the state-owned Emirates is currently not planning to relocate its passenger traffic there with smaller planes. The year 2020 is not targeted here. For the time being, DWC will remain a focus for cargo, large-capacity and cheap flights. Due to the difficult financial situation, attracting investors for the accompanying urban development additions to the DWC is also stalling. The emirate leadership is sticking to the expansion plans according to the master plan. It is convinced that it will offer exactly the right capacities for the emerging global economic upswing.

In the current state of development, regular or occasional use takes place among others by the following airlines: Kalitta Air , Air Atlanta Icelandic , Cargolux , Martinair Cargo, Rus Aviation , Condor Flugdienst and Etihad (for training flights ).

The airlines Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Cargolux and most recently Emirates Cargo in May 2014 have now completely relocated their freighter flights to DWC.

Dubai Air Show

In November 2013, 2015 and 2017 the Dubai Air Show took place at DWC . It is held every two years and was previously held at DXB Airport .

Dubai World Central Master Plan

Dubai-World Central International Airport (model with 6 runways, as of 2006)

The overall project “Dubai World Central” is to cover a total area of 140 square kilometers of desert terrain south of the Jabal Ali free trade zone. In addition to the actual interior DWC airport, it also includes satellite-like facilities for logistics (Dubai Logistics City, 25 square kilometers), aviation research and development, the aviation industry, aviation service and maintenance companies (Aviation City, around 12 square kilometers), as well as several residential quarters (Residential City and Golf City) as well as a mixed commercial city (with up to 800 possible high-rise buildings).

The International Humanitarian City (IHC) and the new Dubai exhibition center , the “Dubai Exhibition World”, are also located on the site as separate projects . Half of all aid supplies worldwide are sent to the crisis areas via the IHC . Most of the relief supplies go to the Middle East . The warehouse has a capacity of over 60,000 square meters. There the rescue kits are put together and picked and stored from deliveries from Chinese, Indian and Pakistani manufacturers. There is also a car repair shop in another hall, where UN off-road vehicles are modified and repaired.

The airport site is designed as a place of work and residence for over 800,000 people.

The Dubai Logistics City advertises with the integration of the airport, seaport and general production and logistics areas within a free trade zone. The transshipment of goods from the port of Jebel Ali, which is about 10 km away, to the DWC air freight area should only take four hours. In this way, larger quantities of high-quality goods in combined sea-air transport, for example from Asia to Europe / North America, can reach their destination in an unrivaled short time at optimal costs.

outlook

Depending on the development of the traffic volume, four additional runways and 15 additional freight terminals can be built in "Phase 2"; the civil engineering infrastructure required for this is already in place. The main part of the passenger airport planned in the center with the so-called midfield terminals is currently in the design planning phase - this core part of the airport is not to be started before 2018. Overall, the central airport should have five (of the six originally planned in the master plan) each 4500 m long runways, which are at least 800 m apart, i.e. can be used in parallel and simultaneously without being impaired by wake vortices .

After final completion (after 2025 Template: future / in 5 years), the airport can and should, according to the latest calculations, handle 160 million passengers annually and around 12 million tons of air freight, i.e. almost six times the freight volume of Frankfurt am Main Airport in 2007 . The aim is to achieve the passenger volume, which far exceeds regional demand, by using the geostrategically favorable location of Dubai on the Persian Gulf with transit traffic. The new airport will initially complement the current Dubai airport , which is 45 kilometers to the north-east, has been completely renovated and will soon be at its capacity limit, and then, in the course of the DWC expansion, will be upgraded to a second airport in the medium term. According to the original plan, the purple line was to be a particularly fast 49 km long stretch of the Dubai Metro from the end of 2012, connecting the new DWC Airport with the city center of Dubai and the old Dubai Airport. The project is currently (2017) no longer being pursued, which is a further competitive disadvantage for DWC.

In the long term, the state-owned airline Emirates will station its entire Airbus A380 fleet at the DWC. According to the current plan, part of the international transit traffic in the directions America / Europe - Western Asia / South Asia / Australia is to be lured away from the hubs in Europe and South Asia, some of which have been less favorable geostrategically , and directed to DWC.

In August 2019, the financing of the airport construction was frozen and a revision of the master plan was announced.
