The Kayseri attack took place in the Turkish city ​​of Kayseri on December 17, 2016 , when a suicide bomber killed 14 Turkish soldiers using a car bomb . 55 other people were injured.

The attack occurred near Erciyes University and hit a bus carrying soldiers who were allowed to spend a day off outside the barracks. The assassin had driven his small white car next to the bus and caused it to explode as it had just pulled into a bus stop. The incident was recorded by the dash cam of a vehicle behind. 14 soldiers were killed immediately or died in hospital, including 40-year-old Major Bülent Albayrak as the highest-ranking victim. The other fatalities were non-commissioned officers. Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced the number of 55 injured people, six of whom were still in critical condition after the attack.

After the event, Provincial Governor Suleyman Kamçı and later Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım confirmed that it had been a suicide attack. The Turkish authorities imposed a blackout, among other things to prevent false reports from being circulated that could cause public panic or serve the goals of terrorist organizations. President Recep Erdoğan linked the attack with Turkish counter-terrorism operations in Syria and Iraq and spoke of attacks that affect all people in Turkey. In a letter to Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and announced his readiness to expand cooperation with Turkey in the field of anti-terrorism. The Freedom Falcons of Kurdistan (TAK) confessed to the attack on their website and announced further acts of violence. The attack was aimed at soldiers of the command brigade stationed in Kayseri, which is involved in fighting against militant Kurds in northern Syria. The TAK also confessed to the bomb attacks in Istanbul a week earlier . The Turkish government does not see the TAK as an independent organization, but as an extended arm of the PKK. The suicide bomber is said to have been a man born in 1990 from the eastern Anatolian city of Van .

On December 17, prosecutors announced the arrest of 15 suspects. In several cities there were riots against institutions of the pro-Kurdish party HDP . The HDP headquarters in Kayseri was stormed and the windows were smashed, people also penetrated the roof of the building, hoisted the flag of the nationalist MHP and set fire.
