Ansgar Zerfass

Ansgar Zerfaß (born October 11, 1965 in Solingen ) is a German communications and media scientist.


In 1990, Zerfaß graduated from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a degree in business administration and communication . In 1995 he received his doctoral thesis in corporate management and public relations. Foundation of a theory of corporate communication and public relations for Dr. rer. pole. PhD . As a research assistant at the chair for corporate management at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg with Horst Steinmann , he was a full-time lecturer for six years. He then held managerial positions in corporate communications and political consulting for ten years, most recently as a member of the management of MFG Baden-Württemberg mbH in Stuttgart, the Baden-Württemberg competence center for IT and media. In addition, he worked as a lecturer at several universities and completed his habilitation in Erlangen-Nuremberg for communication studies under the mentorship of Winfried Schulz .

Zerfaß is a university professor at the Institute for Communication and Media Studies at the University of Leipzig . Since 2006 he has been Professor of Communication Management there and was appointed Professor of Strategic Communication in autumn 2014. Since 2013 he has also been Professor in Communication and Leadership at BI Norwegian Business School, Oslo.

Zerfaß is u. a. Editor of the International Journal of Strategic Communication (USA), Plank Scholar at the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama , Past President of the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA) in Brussels, initiator and member of the academic management team Society for Business Management and Communication ; Scientific advisory board of the Corporate Communication Cluster Vienna in Austria as well as scientific advisor of the Communication Benchmarking Initiative in Germany. He is also an advisory board member of the Leipzig Public Relations Student Association. He is the author and editor of 35 books and more than 340 specialist articles as well as studies in the research fields of communication management , corporate communication , public relations , innovation communication and integrated communication .

The European Communication Monitor , which is considered to be the world's largest empirical study on strategic communication, was launched by him in 2007. Since then, it has been implemented annually with a research team from several European universities and is now supplemented by the North American Communication Monitor, the Latin American Communication Monitor and the Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor , so that the study series in each survey wave more than 5,000 respondents and more than 80 Spanning countries.

Zerfaß has received several prizes for his research projects, including the Pathfinder Award from the Institute for Public Relations, USA (2014), the Jackson Jackson & Wagner Science Award from the Public Relations Society of America (2015) and the Hermann Weiler Foundation award , Nuremberg (1998), the Albert Oeckl Prize of the DPRG (1995) and the Ludwig Schunk Prize for Economics from the University of Giessen (1997). With communication campaigns, Zerfaß won the German PR Prize in 2000, the German Multimedia Award in 2005 and the PR Report Award in 2010. In 2005 he was awarded the title of PR Head of the Year . In 2010 he took first place in the ranking of German-speaking PR professors. Zerfaß students have been honored several times by various institutions as authors of the best theses in the field of corporate communication in Germany and Europe.

Zerfaß worked for several years as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the University of Leipzig. In his former role as managing director of the Institute for Communication and Media Studies, Zerfaß tried to reorganize communication and media studies at the University of Leipzig from 2011, which was initially controversial. The concept for the restructuring of the institute was later adopted by mutual agreement with minor revisions by all departments, faculty and rectorate involved and gradually implemented from 2012.
