Ansuz
Ansuz ( ᚨ ) is the fourth rune of the older Futhark and the Old Norse runic alphabet with the sound value a. The reconstructed Germanic name means " Ase ". It appears in the runic poems as Old Norse ōss , Old English ōs or Gothic aza .
Sound value
In the younger Futhark the sound value changed to / o /, which is also reflected in the rune poems. It may have originally been between / a / and / o /.
The transcription is usually carried out with the Latin letter a or in the younger Futhark with ą .
variants
In addition to Ós ( ᚩ ) with the sound / o / in the old position, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc uses two additional runes derived from Ansuz, namely Ác ( ᚪ ) with the sound / a / and Æsc ( ᚫ ) with the sound / æ /.
