Thurisaz

Thurisaz or Thornuz ( ) is the third rune of the older Futhark and the Old Norse runic alphabet with the sound value th . The reconstructed Germanic names mean "giant" ( Thurse ) or "thorn". They appear in the rune poems as Old Norse þurs , Old English þorn or Gothic thyth .

Use in modern times

As “Thorn” (Þ þ), the character found its way into the Latin writing system in Old English . In Icelandic it has been preserved as a character until modern times , its sound value corresponds to the (voiceless) English th . In addition, the character is used in the transcription of the Old Norse and (often) the Gothic language instead of th.
