Antónia Adelaide Ferreira

Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira (born July 4, 1811 in Peso da Régua ; † March 26, 1896 ibid) was a Portuguese entrepreneur who made the Ferreira (port wine) brand famous.

Widowed at an early age, she took on the family business, which mainly produced wine. She modernized the process of port wine production, created new port wines, expanded wine cultivation and campaigned against the neglect of port wine production by politicians. Her port company gained worldwide fame, particularly as a result of its extensive exports to the United Kingdom .

It increased the family fortune significantly. At the same time, she developed charitable activities in her home region and helped set up hospitals, schools and kindergartens. The population gave it the name Ferreirinha , a well-meaning belittling of their house name.

In the 2007 organized by the public television broadcaster RTP, she was ranked 39th for the “Greatest Portuguese of All Time”.
