Antonio Joaquim Garcia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

António Joaquim Garcia was a Portuguese naval officer and colonial administrator.

After Francisco Teixeira da Silva could no longer exercise his office for health reasons, Captain Garcia took over the post of acting governor of Portuguese Timor in 1869 , which he held until 1870.

After completing his service in Timor , he wrote a detailed report on the conditions in the colony for his superiors in Macau . In this, Garcia complained, among other things, of the colony's poor financial situation. In 1870 only 23 Liurai (petty kings) paid taxes to the colonial rulers. He also recommended combating the proven loss in the customs house. Garcia put hope in the use of mineral resources: copper in Vemasse , sulfur in Viqueque and gold, salt and coal in Laga . But there were no real successes.

In 1887 Garcia was once again entrusted with the administration of Portuguese Timor as interim governor ( Governador internio ).
