The Antas da Caeira (also known as Antas do Monte da Caeira ) are eight more or less well-preserved, closely spaced Antas in Vimieiro near Pavia in the Évora district in the Alentejo in Portugal . Anta is the Portuguese name for around 5000 megalithic structures or dolmens that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the cardial or imprint culture .

The first archaeological excavations were carried out in 1921 by Virgílio Correia. Most of the finds from this necropolis are in the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia in Lisbon , the rest may be in museums in Germany. There are records of the artifacts in the explanations of the German researcher couple Vera Leisner and Georg Leisner , who also carried out their own investigations of the site. The numbering is not official.

Anta da Casa Velha

The polygonal chamber of the Anta da Casa Velha (dt. The old house) of about 2.8 m in diameter is formed by eight bearing stones. The cover plate is missing. The width of the entrance is identical to that of the corridor. The axial passage is about 2.4 m long and constantly wide. It has a cover plate near the entrance to the chamber. There's a fence around this ante.

Location: 38 ° 52 ′ 32.6 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 0.5 ″  W.

Anta 2

The ante with a polygonal chamber about 2.5 m in diameter consists of seven supporting stones. The access is blocked by a relocated bearing stone. The corridor is about two meters long. The chamber has been destroyed by the closely adjacent trees. Two blades were found as artifacts .

Location: 38 ° 52 ′ 56.8 ″  N , 7 ° 56 ′ 53.9 ″  W.

Anta 3

The Anta has a polygonal chamber 3.6 m in diameter. The width of the entrance is essentially identical to that of the 2.8 m long axial passage, which is initially very wide but tapers towards the chamber. The large ceiling plate broke and fell inside the chamber. Two cover plates of the corridor have been preserved.

Location: 38 ° 53 ′ 3.4 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 9.6 ″  W.

Anta 4

The severely disturbed Anta had a polygonal chamber made of a number of supporting stones that can no longer be determined (three have been preserved). Only traces of the corridor have been preserved.

Location: 38 ° 53 ′ 0.6 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 12.8 ″  W.

Anta 5

The smallest ante with a polygonal chamber of around 2.4 m in diameter consists of seven supporting stones. A large slab to the side of the aisle is probably the top slab of the chamber. The width of the entrance to the chamber is essentially identical to that of the entrance to the hallway. Traces of an approximately 2.7 m long corridor have been preserved. A blade and a serrated sickle (traditionally associated with artefacts from the Copper and Bronze Ages ) were found as artifacts .

Location: 38 ° 52 ′ 56 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 7 ″  W.

Anta 6

The Anta with a polygonal chamber of around 3.0 m in diameter consists of seven supporting stones. The corridor has not been preserved. The chamber has been destroyed by the closely adjacent trees.

Location: 38 ° 53 ′ 12.5 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 5 ″  W.

Anta 7

The largest chamber of the local polygonal Antas has a diameter of about 3.7 m and is formed by seven bearing stones. The corridor is very narrow and about three feet long. It tapers towards the entrance to the chamber. Ornate goblets, 33 slate idols , 15 axes made of polished stone, 7 blades, an arrowhead and a báculo were found as artifacts .

Location: 38 ° 53 ′ 15.7 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 12.7 ″  W.

Anta 8

The ante with a polygonal chamber about 2.5 m in diameter had an approximately 2.0 m long corridor of indefinite shape.

Location: 38 ° 53 ′ 11.4 ″  N , 7 ° 57 ′ 19.9 ″  W.

The menhir

The Caeira menhir, measuring around 5.2 m , was discovered by Manuel Calado in 1994. It is a monolith in the shape of a cylinder of max. 1.2 m in diameter, lying fallen next to a tree. Whether there are ornaments on the underside cannot be determined as few archaeological studies have been made. The menhir is not yet classified as a cultural heritage and is therefore not protected by law.

Location: 38 ° 52 ′ 49 ″  N , 7 ° 56 ′ 55.1 ″  W.
