Vimieiro is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Arraiolos . It has 1589 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

More than 5000 years old tombs ( Antas ) and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement, such as the Antas da Caeira or the Antas da Herdade dos Prates .

The area was part of the Roman province of Lusitania . The Romans built bridges here and a Roman road led here.

The current place was probably created in the course of the resettlement policy in connection with the Reconquista . 1257 Vimieiro received city rights for the first time and became the seat of an independent district. King Manuel I renewed the town charter in 1512 .

Vimieiro took off when in the 18th century D.Sancho Faro e Sousa, Count of Vimieiro (Portuguese: Conde do Vimieiro) converted a former military quarter into a palace. In particular, his wife, the writer Teresa de Mello Breyner, ensured a cultural bloom in the place. (The writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919–2004) and the actor Nicolau Breyner (* 1940) later descended from her family line .)

1801 died out with the childless D. João de Faro e Sousa also the title of Count of Vimieiro. The circle went to the crown, and the place increasingly lost its importance. In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Vimieiro district was dissolved in 1855 and Arraiolos was incorporated.
