Igrejinha (Eng .: small church) is a community ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Arraiolos . It has 931 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
History and sights
In the 1st century BC A Roman fortress of the province of Lusitania existed here . Its atypical structure and other archaeological evidence point to an older fortification, probably from the Castro culture on which the Romans built. The archaeological site is known today as Castelo do Mau Vizinho (English: Castle of the malicious neighbor) or Castelo de Pontega .
The single-nave parish church Igreja Paroquial da Igrejinha (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação ) from the 16th century is a listed building. It shows features of the Baroque and Rococo , including a gilded altar ( Talha dourada ), azulejo paneling, a Rococo altarpiece and baroque wall paintings.
