features

Anthemis chia is an annual stem therophyte that reaches heights of 5 to 40 centimeters. The bracts are blunt and have a distinct dark brown or black skin edge. There are ray florets and these are fertile. The tubular flowers are cup-shaped and suddenly expand in their upper half. The fruit base is hemispherical or hemispherical-egg-shaped. The fruits of the ray florets have a large, narrow, translucent ear that is as long as the fruit. This is sometimes the case with outer tubular flowers. The remaining fruits have a thick and very short crown. In the form of Anthemis chia f. inornata Greuter, Matthäs & Risse , the latter applies to all flowers.

The flowering period extends from January to April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

Anthemis chia occurs in the eastern Mediterranean . It comes from Italy, Sicily, the Balkan Peninsula, the Aegean Sea, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon and Syria, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. The species grows in cypress forests, on rocks and rubble, in Phrygana, on ruderal sites as well as on fallow and cultivated land. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 1600 meters.
