Anthony Ellmaker Roberts (born October 29, 1803 at Barneston Station , Chester County , Pennsylvania , †  January 23, 1885 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Athnony Roberts received only a limited education. Between 1816 and 1839 he worked in New Holland in trade. In 1839 he moved to Lancaster. From 1839 to 1842 he was sheriff in Lancaster County . In 1842 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . Between 1850 and 1853 he was US Marshal for the eastern part of the state of Pennsylvania. In this capacity he was confronted with the consequences of the compromise of 1850 when it came to returning escaped slaves to their previous owners.

In the congressional election of 1854 Roberts was elected as a candidate for the opposition party in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Isaac Ellmaker Hiester on March 4, 1855 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1859. From 1857 he was a member of the Republican Party , whose establishment in Pennsylvania he helped shape. In 1858 he declined to run again.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Anthony Roberts took care of his lands in Lancaster. He also worked as a manager of several other properties. He died in Lancaster on January 23, 1885. His grandson Robert Gray Bushong (1883-1951) was also a member of Congress.
