Anthony Hopwood

Anthony George Hopwood (born May 18, 1944 in Stoke-on-Trent , † May 8, 2010 ) was a British scientist ( accounting ).

biography

After attending high school in Burslem , Staffordshire , Hopwood studied Accountancy at the London School of Economics . In 1965 he went to the University of Chicago on a Fulbright Scholarship , where he also received his doctorate. From 1970 to 1973 he was a lecturer at the Manchester Business School . After that, however, he went back to his roots, the London School of Economics, where he was appointed professor for "International Accounting and Financial Management" in 1985. He held this position until he was appointed to Saïd Business School at Oxford University in 1995 . There he was dean from 1999 to 2006 .

Hopwood researched primarily in the intersection between accounting and behavioral sciences ("behavioral accounting"). For example, he showed how information from accounting is used to evaluate performance and what effects (stress, relationship with supervisors and colleagues) this has. Through his work in this field, he became the first editor-in-chief of the prestigious journal Accounting, Organizations and Society in 1976 , a position he filled until 2009.
