Anthony Kerr

Anthony Kerr (* 16th October 1965 in Belfast ) is a British jazz - vibraphone (vibraphone, marimba ) and composer.

Career

Kerr studied drums at the City of Belfast School of Music from 1981 to 1984 and played percussion with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland from 1985 to 1988. During this time he continued his studies in New York City vibraphone with David Friedman and improvisation and composition with Kenny Werner and in 1987 he won a scholarship at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. He played as a freelancer with jazz musicians such as the guitarist Louis Stewart , the pianist John Taylor , Mike Westbrook (with whose big band he toured a lot in Europe), the alto saxophonist Peter King , Norma Winstone , Tim Garland , Alan Skidmore , with Georgie Fame , the tentet by Charlie Watts , the Octet by Alan Barnes and the London Jazz Orchestra.

Kerr teaches at the City of Belfast School of Music and Harrow School and teaches improvisation at UK universities, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music and at workshops in London, Belfast and Southampton. He also teaches percussion in the Irish Youth Jazz Orchestra. He plays in the BBC Big Band and leads his own quartet and The Mallet Band .

In 1994 Kerr recorded an album of his own compositions with the singer Jacqui Dankworth ( First Cry , EFZ). With his quartet he released Now Hear This (Jazz House, 1997), with his sextet Heading Home (2012).
