Tony Masters

Tony Masters (born November 9, 1919 as Anthony H. Masters in Elham near Folkestone , Kent , United Kingdom , † May 12, 1990 in southern France ) was a British film architect .

Live and act

Masters attended University College School in London-Hampstead and received four years of advanced training at the Hornsey School of Art. In between, at the start of the war in 1939, Masters was drafted. Among other things, he fought on the fronts in North Africa and Italy. Immediately after the end of the war, Masters worked in Rome as an art editor and draftsman for a year. He then returned to London, where he was hired by Riverside Studios and learned the scene-making craft of film from scratch. He has been demonstrable as a film illustrator since the late 1940s.

Tony Masters made his debut as chief architect in 1955 in the surrealist, medium-length film The Custom-Made Coat . Masters' breakthrough came in 1965 when he was entrusted with the extensive designs for Stanley Kubrick's seminal science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey . For this achievement he received an Oscar nomination in 1969 . Masters' later work, however, largely disappointed. Only when he returned to the science fiction genre in 1983, when he was again able to create futuristic backdrops for David Lynch's gloomy end-time vision, The Desert Planet , did he once again achieve an important stage design achievement.
