Anthony Melnikas
Anthony J. Melnikas , actually Antanas Melnikas, (born January 20, 1927 in Kaunas , Lithuania , † April 14, 2005 in Columbus, Ohio ) was an American art historian .
Anthony Melnikas studied art history at the University of Pisa and the art academies in Florence and Rome. He then went to the USA, where he studied at Wayne State University ( MA ) and received his doctorate in 1961 from the University of Michigan with a dissertation on Gentile da Fabriano . He became a professor of art history at Ohio State University . His research area were the miniatures in medieval legal manuscripts.
He became known in 1995 when he tried to sell pages he had stolen from a manuscript in the Vatican Library in the USA. He was arrested and sentenced in 1996 to fourteen months in prison.
