Antje Bultmann Lemke

Antje Bultmann Lemke (born July 27, 1918 in Breslau ; † May 15, 2017 in Syracuse ) was a German-American librarian .

Life

Antje Bultmann was the oldest of three daughters of the Protestant theologian Rudolf Bultmann . In Marburg she attended the Elisabeth School from 1928 , passed her Abitur there in 1937 and began training in nursing gymnastics at the Schwarzerden School in the Rhön . In August 1939 she married the psychiatrist Rudolf Lemke in Marburg , had to give up her training and moved with him to Jena . There she met the writer Ricarda Huch , who lives in Jena . The marriage was divorced on February 26, 1942. On October 1, 1941, she had already started training in the senior service at academic libraries in the Leipzig University Library . After graduating as a qualified librarian, she got a job at the Thuringian State Office for Libraries in Jena on November 1, 1944, and on August 1, 1945, she became the head of the service library of the Thuringian State Office for Books and Libraries. On October 31, 1946, she ended this activity and became Ricarda Huch's private secretary. With this she left the Soviet occupation zone in October 1947, went with her via Berlin to Frankfurt and stood by her until her death on November 17, 1947.

In 1949 she went to the USA. In 1952 she was a librarian at Syracuse University in Syracuse in New York hired as Art and Musician Librarian. There she acquired a Masters in Library Science at the School of Library Science in 1956, where she also taught as a professor alongside her work as a librarian. In 1986 she retired.

She was a translator of Albert Schweitzer's works into English.
