Antoine-Benoît de Clermont-Tonnerre

Antoine-Benoît de Clermont-Tonnerre (* 1642 in Ravières , † August 24, 1678 in Fréjus ) was a French Roman Catholic bishop .

life and career

Antoine-Benoît de Clermont-Tonnerre came from the noble family Clermont-Tonnerre . In 1662 he received his doctorate in theology at the Sorbonne . In 1674 he was appointed Bishop of Fréjus , but was not consecrated until 1676. On November 22nd, 1676, he ceremoniously entered Fréjus. In 1677 he was able to open a new seminary.

On a visitation trip in October 1677 in Tourrettes, for unexplained reasons, there was a clash with the local lord Count Pierre de Villeneuve, who was assaulted. Clermont-Tonnerre excommunicated its offender, but had to reverse it in June 1678. The matter affected his health. He died in August of the same year at the age of 36 and was buried in the Cathedral of Fréjus .
