Antoine Hugot

Antoine Hugot (* 1761 in Paris ; † September 18, 1803 ibid) was a French flautist , university teacher and composer .

life and work

Hugot received lessons from a Creole musician named Atys (Atis) who worked in Paris. In the 1780s he made a name for himself as a flute soloist at the Concerts spirituel . In 1789 he became principal flutist in the newly founded Parisian orchestra “Bouffons italiens”, which was directed by Giovanni Battista Viotti . In 1793 Hugot joined the music corps of the Guard National of Paris. In 1795 he was appointed one of the then four flute professors of the newly founded Conservatoire de Paris . In 1803 Hugot himself put an end to his life by jumping out of a window on the fourth floor.

Hugot's compositional legacy includes 6 flute concerts, duets for 2 flutes, sonatas and études. In 1804, Hugot's colleague Johann Georg Wunderlich published the textbook Méthode de Flûte du Conservatoire par MM Hugot et Wunderlich / Membres du Conservatoire on the basis of Hugot's preliminary work .
