Antoine Mahaut

Antoine Mahaut (also: Anton Mahault) (* around 1719 in Namur ; † 1785 ) was a composer from what is now Belgium, a flautist and music editor.

Life

Mahaut was probably trained by his father, at the age of 15 he entered the service of the Bishop of Namur, Thomas de Strickland de Sigergh. In 1736 he traveled to London, where he met the publisher John Walsh , who published his Six Sonatas or Duets . From 1737 to 1760 he lived in Amsterdam , from there he fled to Paris because of unpaid debts, where he had already been in 1740 and 1755. He also traveled to Dresden and Augsburg. In 1751 he received the royal privilege to publish his works. From 1760, he spent his old age in a French monastery in order to escape his Amsterdam creditors.

Works

Mahaut published his textbook for flute Nouvelle méthode pour apprendre en peu de temps а jouer la flute (1759, Paris and Amsterdam) in both Dutch and French.

The symphonies correspond roughly to the style of Carl Stamitz or François-Joseph Gossec .
